Kraket was founded on the 14th of july 1972. It’s an association meant for students Econometrics and Operational Research at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The name finds it’s origin in the Dutch words ‘Kritische Aktuarissen en Econometristen’ which means ‘Critical Actuaries and Econometrists’. Almost all students are member of the association. Kraket organizes lots of activities, some more suited for the active, others for the more passive, students. The one thing all activities have in common is having fun.
The more relaxing activities are events like karaoke, movies and shaking cocktails. Next to that there are a variety of sportive events, like football, snooker, ice skating and golf. The main event of the year is the Kraketweekend, where a group of students goes to a location that will be reveiled on arrival, to participate in a lot of different activities, with the main goal to get to know students from other years.
Next to all the not very serious events, Kraket organizes a couple of company orientated events like case days, inhousedays and the National Econometrists Day (LED in Dutch). Next to these very serious days there are also less formal ways of getting to know company’s like an indoor football tournament with Mercer and a New Year’s diner with Watson Waytt.
There are still a few things left to tell. Once every two years there is a trip abroad. Last year students and teachers went to Hong Kong. They visited several universities and companies, and besides that they had some time to see other aspects of the country as well. In 2009 the trip will go to New York. Brazil, Japan, Israël, South-Africa and India are some countries we went to before going to Hong Kong.
Finally, there are two magazines; the first one is the ‘Ecotribune’, a magazine every student can write an article for, with her/his stories about anything one way or another related to Kraket. The other magazine is the Aenorm’, in association with the VSAE, is a more scientific magazine.

The VSAE is the association for students Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics and Operational Research. The VSAE was founded in 1963 and organizes events for students of the University of Amsterdam. In the past 44 years the VSAE has grown to become one of the biggest in its field. We try to make the study of our all members more pleasant by organizing both serious and relaxing activities.
The serious activities involve studyrelated projects like the “Acturiaatcongres” (an Actuarial Congress) and the “Beroependagen” on which students are introduced into the real business world. Also we organize an annual Study journey in which a group of students will have the opportunity to learn something about a foreign culture and at the same time will help a charity by solving a case. This year the International Study Project, as it is called, will visit Mexico-City and we will solve a case for Greenpeace.
Examples of relaxing activity are sporting events and feasts. Every year a freshman committee is draught to organize these kinds of events, which introduces new students to VSAE and gives them the opportunity to get to know our association.
Last but not least we organize a free drink on a monthly basis. So if you want to get to know us better, come and visit café “de Heffer” every second Tuesday-evening of the month! |
